MosKwit – The Natural Mosquito Repellent

“Mosquito” is a Spanish or Portuguese word meaning “little fly” .  There are more than 3000 varieties of mosquitoes in the world.  Mosquito bites can cause skin irritation through an allergic reaction to the mosquito’s saliva – this is what causes the red bump and itching. In addition, some mosquitoes can transmit serious diseases and viruses such as malaria, dengue virus, Zika and West Nile virus, which can lead to disabling and potentially deadly effects.

Different species of mosquitoes prefer different types of standing water in which to lay their eggs.  Some common sites in which some species lay their eggs include:

  • Marshes
  • Temporary pools
  • tree holes,
  • old tires,
  • buckets,
  • toys,
  • potted plant trays and saucers,
  • plastic covers or tarpaulins and even
  • places as small as bottle caps

or to say, wherever water clogging is observed.

In general mosquitoes live indoors and outdoors. Mosquitoes can bite day and night. They like dark, humid places to hide themselves.  Adult mosquitoes live for about 2 to 4 weeks depending on the species, humidity, temperature, and other factors. Female mosquitoes often live longer than male mosquitoes.  Only female mosquitoes bite people and animals to get a blood meal. Female mosquitoes need a blood meal to produce eggs.  Mosquitoes get infected with germs, such as viruses and parasites, when they bite infected people and animals.  It takes just a few infected mosquitoes to start an outbreak in a community and put you and your family at risk of becoming sick.

Methods to avoid Mosquito bites:

  • The ideal situation is to destroy / close down mosquito breeding areas, by avoiding water collection in those areas.  However, it is impossible to avoid  100% water logging and any small unattended water log is sufficient for breeding mosquitoes.
  • In the next level of mosquito control can be by controlling the larvicidal growth by applying larvicides or spraying insecticides in outdoor area. If you have a septic tank, repair cracks or gaps. Cover open vent or plumbing pipes. Use wire mesh with holes smaller than an adult mosquito.  Fill the tree holes to reduce mosquito habitat areas.  Regularly attend to water storage areas / vessels and make sure that they are tightly closed.
  • To  minimize mosquito entry inside the house, One may consider using window screens.

People use Chemical Mosquito repellents / killers to avoid mosquito bites.  Chemicals such as DEET, organophosphate insecticides such as malathion or synthetic pyrethroids are used to drive away / kill the adult mosquitoes.  As per CDC, these chemicals  are generally safe if used according to instructions.  Many of these chemicals have side effects and not suitable for Children below certain age or for people who have prior history of illness.

The best way to repel mosquito is by the natural repellents – which will only repel mosquitoes, not kill them.  They do not have any side effects and safe for use for all age groups.
