Refrigerant is usually a compressed gas or mixture of gases, which undergoes phase transition from liquid to gas and back, during a refrigeration cycle. Historically, ammonia, chloroalkanes, chlorofluorocarbon (CFC), Hydrochloroflurocarbon (HCFC) were used as refrigerants. Due to higher ozone depletion potential (ODP) and Global warming potential (GDP), many of them are being phased out. The widely accepted refrigerants as of now are the hydrofluorocarbons (HFC).
